What Does Cloud Interconnection Connect? An On-Premises App and Off-Site Storage Example

In this example, cloud interconnection describes how an on-premises application reaches an off-site storage service—not the storage service itself.

A hypothetical shared-document request shows how to separate the storage choice from the access path, then identify what still needs checking.

What is being connected?

Here, “cloud interconnection” is a way to describe the access path from an on-premises system to an off-site cloud storage service. It does not name the storage service or specify a particular physical circuit. The distinction matters because choosing a place to store data does not, by itself, establish how an application will reach it.

How would a shared-document request become two decisions?

Consider a hypothetical request: keep an application on premises, but have it save shared documents to an off-site service and read them back. This is not a deployed example; the document volume and frequency of use are unspecified.

  • **Choose the storage function.** If the application needs to work with a file-and-folder hierarchy, cloud file storage is a candidate. Object storage instead manages objects containing data, metadata and an identifier; block storage is another storage type. Those labels alone do not establish compatibility with this application.
  • **Choose a path to the service.** Public internet access and a dedicated private network connection are possibilities to investigate, not two kinds of storage. Check which, if either, the selected service and the on-premises environment actually support.

There is also an interface question between those decisions. IBM describes examples involving a web portal, website or mobile app communicating with storage through an API. The application’s actual method for reading and writing documents must be checked against the chosen service. A usable network path does not establish that the application can use the service.

Does a private connection mean private cloud storage?

No. A dedicated private connection describes a way to access a service; private cloud storage describes a storage environment and its deployment arrangement. IBM describes private cloud storage that can reside on premises or be built as a dedicated environment by a provider. The path name therefore does not tell you where the storage runs or who operates it.

Nor does the path name settle security. IBM distinguishes the provider’s responsibility for underlying infrastructure security from the customer’s responsibility for its data and applications. Authentication, authorization and protection of data in transit remain matters to check, along with the terms of the actual service. This evidence does not establish that either access path is safer for the hypothetical application.

What must be specified before comparing options?

Record the form of the data and how the application must access it. To examine storage-service charges, also establish the region, stored capacity, data transferred, and how often data will be accessed or changed. IBM describes these as factors that can affect charges; its explanation does not show which network path would cost less in this case.

If the request includes recovery after data loss rather than simply storing documents, specify the required backup and recovery function and how often backups should run. IBM discusses redundant storage and cloud backup and recovery separately. Redundancy alone does not establish the recovery capability or schedule this application needs.

What does this example let you decide?

The request can now be written as three things to verify together: the storage function for the documents, an interface the on-premises application can use, and an available path to the selected service. That wording prevents “connect to the cloud” from hiding separate requirements. It does not select a winning path: without results for this environment, neither path’s performance or availability can be promised.
